The editor of a Wisconsin dairy paper recently wrote
an article on stress-relief milk available in Japan. He stated that
Nakazawa Foods markets the milk. It is called superpremiun Milk and
claims to reduce stress in people who drink it. The stress relief
milk is one component in Nakazawa Food products named Adult Milk.
The stress relief milk comes from cows milked precisely at dawn.
Cows produce peak levels of melatonin at night so milking at dawn
yields high levels. The hormone melatonin has been shown to help
people sleep better and prevent headaches. Is also may help in preventing
DNA damage and winter depression and in treating Parkinson and Alzheimer
diseases. Mice getting supplemental melatonin were found to live
20 percent longer.
Comments by Dr. Whitmore:
Stress relief milk sells for a high price. It is
marketed as Adult MilkEfor adults. We can add this to a growing list of dairy products designed
for another niche market. The editor stated that regular milk contains
50 to 65 percent as much melatonin as stress-relief milk. Drinking
a glass of regular milk prior to going to bed could also help people
sleep better.
Another article in the same Wisconsin dairy publication
discussed the growing appetite of Japan for milk protein and whey
products. The USA currently has the dominant share of whey exports
to Japan at 53 percent. The USA is eager to capture a larger share
of the growing market in Japan.
USA actually imports much more dairy products than
it exports. We had nearly a one billion dollar deficit each year
from 2001 through 2005. That has really changed in the last two years.
For the first ten months of 2007 we imported $2.3 billion and exported
$2.4 billion. This is the first time we have ever exported more dairy
products than we imported. This is a major, major market change for
our dairymen. This is why the price of milk has increased so much
in my country. The world demand for milk products is greater than
the supply. The weak dollar in the USA is also a factor in the World
market place. I wish there was a way that your dairy clients could
receive greater benefits from this global demand for dairy products.
